Freedom for Albertans!
Our leader, Paul Hinman is the original leader of the Wildrose movement. Once again he is bringing together a coalition of people who are loyal to Alberta and to the principles of freedom.
Paul has been elected twice to the Alberta Legislature, though never in a legacy party. He is principled and knows the importance of prioritizing. He understands that the proper role of government is to ensure a just society with a free market.
He recognizes the need to create a new Constitution that recognizes the Supremacy of God, the Rule of Law and protects the individual’s inalienable rights of:Life, Freedom, Property, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

About Paul
Paul’s Cub Uniform
Early Years
Paul was born in Edmonton, AB in June of 1959 and soon moved to Calgary where he grew up in the neighbourhood of Haysboro. From a young age gymnastics, scouting and farming played a major role in shaping his life.
Paul’s Haddon Road Elementary principle, Mr. George, convinced his parents that this boy full of energy and bored with school needed to do gymnastics. Paul excelled and in a few years went on to compete in the provincials where he finished in the top 6 all-around.
Paul entered the scouting program at age 8 and loved all the challenge badges where he was always eager to try new things. The old Scout Promise, “On my honour, I promise to do my best, to love and serve God, my Queen, my country and my fellowman, and to live by the Scout Law” and the Scout Law, “A Scout is: Helpful and Trustworthy, Kind and cheerful, Considerate and clean, Wise in the wise of his resources” continues to be a guide in his life.
Farming has always been a part of Paul’s life. From the early spring seeding to the fall harvest, the family travelled south to the family’s mixed farm for the weekends where they raised cattle, sheep, chickens, kept a milk cow and riding horses.
Paul has always had a love for animals and continues to enjoy the odd horseback trip. In 1972, Paul’s father Nolan, retired from banking and the family moved to the farm.
Influential Books
Mentors
Paul’s father instilled in him the importance to work hard and to do your best. His father always said, “If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right.” He also stressed the importance of good character, to always deal fairly with your fellow man and to be self-reliant. Paul’s father stressed the importance of continuing education and had Paul take mechanics, construction, electrical, welding, animal husbandry, pen checking, drywalling, artificial insemination, embryo transplanting and irrigation courses to name a few.
Another guiding influence was his grandfather, the Honourable E. W. (Ted) Hinman who served as Alberta’s Provincial Treasurer (Finance Minister) for Ernest C. Manning. He would have Paul read political books such as Frederic Bastiat’s “Selected Essays on Political Economy” and “The Law” along with Elbert Bowden’s, “Economics: The Science of Common Sense.”
“From an early age, good governance and sound economics, not politics and political favours was taught to me by my father and grandfather,” says Hinman. “The lessons I learned through their words, example and the books they introduced me to ignited a thirst for knowledge, a solid understanding of economics and the importance of good governing, not good politics.”

Political Life Begins
At the ripe old age of 14, Paul’s grandfather had Paul drive them to the Alberta Social Credit Party’s annual AGM’s. Paul served as the youth representative on the provincial board and eventually became VP of Policy for the party.
Provincially, Paul was present for the founding meeting of the Alberta Alliance and served as vice-president of policy until he was elected as MLA in 2004.
Federally, Paul was involved early on with Preston Manning and the Reform Party and its evolution to today’s Conservative Party of Canada. Paul fondly remembers the enthusiasm and excitement of the 2005 Montréal Conservative Convention.

MLA Cardston-Taber-Warner
Hinman was elected to his first term as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the constituency of Cardston-Taber-Warner in the 2004 provincial election on November 22, 2004.
His win was historic as he became the first person elected under a fourth party banner, the Alberta Alliance, in the Alberta Legislature.

Party Leadership
In November 2005, Hinman became the leader of the Alberta Alliance. During that time, the political environment in Alberta was changing. On January 19, 2008 Hinman led the merger of the Alliance and the upstart Wildrose. A few weeks later, on February 2, 2008, Stelmach surprised the province with an early and strategic election call. Hinman received accolades during the campaign for his performance in the televised leaders debate. However, he failed to retain his seat.
A year later, in a move he felt would help the party, Hinman stepped down as leader of the Wildrose.
Calgary-Glenmore by-election
Life in politics wasn’t over for Hinman. In May 2009, Calgary-Glenmore MLA Ron Stevens announced his resignation to accept a position as a judge and Hinman, a current residence of the riding, was convinced by Danielle Smith to run in the ensuing by-election. Once again Hinman won a surprising victory and became the first Wildrose MLA in the Alberta Legislature. He not only served the people of Calgary-Glenmore but Albertans across the province as they reached out to his office for help.
In the spring election of 2012, Paul lost his seat but was asked to be a personal advisor to the Leader of the Official Opposition, Danielle Smith, later that year.

Life After Politics
In December 2014, Paul decided it was time to take a break from politics.
During his break Paul enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, hiking, camping, travelling, reading, and continually learning new things. Paul was never far from politics as he also spent time working behind the scenes in trying to advance the cause of freedom in Alberta.
Wildrose is Back!
MORGAN: Paul Hinman rides again!
Original article
By Cory Morgan May 2, 2023
When somebody sent me a note saying Paul Hinman had started and was leading yet another new registered political party in Alberta, I couldn’t believe it. I had to go to the Elections Alberta website to confirm it and even then I had to look twice.
The Wildrose Loyalty Coalition was registered as soon as the writ for the provincial election dropped and the leader is none other than Paul Hinman.
I called Hinman up and as soon as he answered I said, “You must be the most stubborn SOB I have ever met!” Paul chuckled and agreed.
I have known Paul Hinman for a long time and consider him to be something of a political mentor. He has always remained true to his personal social convictions, while being fully dedicated to libertarian political principles. One of the first things he told me when I met him was that I must read The Law by Frédéric Bastiat and I did. The book strongly influenced the development of my political and moral views. That was almost twenty years ago when Hinman was the leader of and sole MLA sitting in the legislature for the Alberta Alliance Party.
In 2008, Hinman led 61 candidates with the Wildrose Alliance Party into a general election. While the party made electoral gains, they won no seats and Hinman lost his own seat by 39 votes.
In 2009, Hinman resigned as the party leader and triggered a leadership election which would select Danielle Smith as the leader of the newly rebranded Wildrose Party. Paul then ran in a by-election in Calgary-Glenmore and pulled off yet another upset victory winning the seat by fewer than 300 votes. In the 2012 general election, Hinman lost the seat as the Hunsperger scandal decimated urban support for the Wildrose Party.
Hinman then took something of a political hiatus until 2020 when he took the leadership of the Wildrose Independence Party. His term was tumultuous and short and despite having a respectable showing as a candidate in the 2022 Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche by-election, his own party board tore him from the leadership in a battle that ended in the courts and left the party in shambles.
Despite Hinman’s indefatigable history, I was still astounded to hear that he was back in the ring and had registered another party. The infighting and failure of the last party would have made almost anybody give up on politics.
To register a party in Alberta is no easy task. It takes thousands of signatures on an official petition of registered voters in a limited period of time. There is another method though and Paul used it. If a group can register candidates in over half of the constituencies of the province in a general election, the group will gain official party status. Hinman has 50 registered candidates. It’s amazing that he managed to get 50 people committed and registered as candidates in such short time while sliding under the radar but he pulled it off.
I asked Paul about the first question he is sure to be hit with in this election; how can he avoid vote splits that could put more NDP MLAs in seats. He explained that of the 50 registered candidates, only five of them will be mounting serious campaigns. Those five will all be running in constituencies where the NDP have no chance of winning. Hinman himself will be running in Taber-Warner where the conservative vote could be split five ways and still wouldn’t let an NDP candidate slip in.
The policies and principles held by the new party will be much like those of the Wildrose Independence Party with a strong focus on provincial autonomy and citizen’s initiated recall of politicians. Hinman feels the UCP has some bad elements within it and needs a strong presence contesting it from the right to keep it honest.
So why the long biography on Hinman?
Well, folks unfamiliar with him need to understand that he is not a man to be dismissed. He is a campaigning and organizational workhorse during and between elections. He just doesn’t seem to know how to give up. Even if only for his own good.
Do I think his fledgling party will win a few seats?
I highly doubt it. Somebody would have to give me some pretty good odds before I would bet on them winning a seat.
That said, I wouldn’t dare count them out and even if the odds are long, they are not zero.
Hinman seems to thrive on being underestimated and to specialize in electoral upsets.
A few of the rural races in this Alberta election just got a whole lot more interesting.
